Denny Walsh, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter who was a consummate nuisance to mobsters, corrupt politicians and his editors, especially at The New York Times, which fired him, died on March 29 at his home in Antelope, Calif., a suburb of Sacramento. His daughter, Colleen Bartow, confirmed the death. She said he had been suffering from several respiratory ailments. Mr. Walsh began his career in 1961 at The St. Louis Globe-Democrat, where he hot-dogged around the newsroom smoking cigars and used the floor as his ashtray. “His laugh was loud and uncontrolled and bordered on the malicious.”

CNN —California will soon be decorated with a rainbow of wildflowers after drenching winter rain set the stage for a spectacular spring superbloom. David McNew/Getty Images/FileBut there’s hope for another brilliant superbloom following the wet winter, Meyer said. Desert sand verbena and dune evening primrose wildflowers bloom in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park's Coyote Canyon on Thursday, March 14. “We don’t know as of yet if it’s going to be a good year for the poppies, given the rain,” Turner cautioned.

KAOBAGOU, Benin—Gunmen pulled 18 villagers from their homes during a night raid this spring, shooting some and slitting the throats of the rest. They wedged hand grenades under the bodies, laying a trap for those who would discover the grisly scene. Two more villagers were later killed when they moved the corpses and triggered the explosives. By then, the attackers were hiding in nearby Pendjari National Park, a refuge for thousands of elephants, herds of antelope, the last few West African cheetahs and, increasingly, Islamist militants.

Thirty-five African elephants in northwestern Zimbabwe dropped dead under baffling circumstances between late August and November 2020. And the extreme conditions that scientists project will occur with more frequency as Earth warms could mean more elephant deaths in the future. Foggin said there was no proven connection between the Zimbabwe and Botswana elephant deaths. An embattled species under threatThe African elephant is a flagship species that faces significant pressure from poaching and habitat loss. Additionally, exporting wildlife samples for analysis involves obtaining multiple permits from different entities — a process which can take months,” the study said.

For Teju Cole, Art Is a Lens on a History of Violence

TREMOR, by Teju ColeNovelist, essayist, critic, photographer, teacher — most writers or artists are content with one or two of these titles, perhaps blurring the distinctions between main and side pursuits. “Tremor” is the most sundry and vagrant of Cole’s works to date, with abrupt changes in form, perspective and theme. (I almost wrote that Cole seems like a postcolonial version of Sebald — but Sebald is already the postcolonial Sebald.) A Nigerian American photographer and professor named Tunde is antiquing in Maine with his Japanese wife, Sadako, when they find a West African antelope headdress, or ci wara. A cheap artifact without provenance, it nonetheless starts Tunde thinking about colonial violence on both sides of the Atlantic.

A bison in Montana in 2019 Photo: Craig Mellish/PBSAs recounted during Ken Burns ’s two-night, four-hour “The American Buffalo,” an Irish peer named Sir St. George Gore embarked on a hunting trip to the American West in the mid-1850s, bringing along 50 people, six wagons, 21 carts, 112 horses and 50 dogs. He spent about a quarter of a million dollars en route to killing 1,500 elk, 2,000 deer, more than 1,000 antelope, 500 bear and 4,000 bison. He was so “wanton,” we are told, he even offended the frontiersmen who spent their days butchering wildlife. When he attempted to breach the Black Hills of South Dakota, the tribes there told him to go, or fight.

It is here that Ugandan running is now thriving, though the region’s talent took time to develop. While Kenya enjoyed relative stability in the decades after it gained independence in 1963, Uganda was at war for much of the 1970s and 1980s. Lawlessness pervaded the Mount Elgon region until the turn of the century: Bandits from neighboring tribes would sweep in at night and conduct raids on cattle, often killing locals in the process. The resettlement process, Kiptala said, was traumatic, but it also helped unlock running talent. Through school, children could access competitions, and by the early 2000s, athletes from the Elgon region were beginning to appear in World Championship and Olympic finals.

Brewer said her Grand Canyon tours stood out because she'd drive guests from Phoenix to the national park in her van. Her Grand Canyon day tour has 666 reviews and an average rating of 4.97, while her tour of Antelope Canyon has 103 five-star reviews. Brewer started tours based on her own knowledge of the area, then picked up extra tidbits from speaking to park rangers and listening to the local radio station every day. Brewer doesn't ask people to leave reviews to avoid being "pushy," but she sometimes mentions her Instagram if it comes up in conversation. "The people that are going to leave reviews are people that are inspired on their own to leave a review," she said.

A researcher found what appear to be cut marks on the bone of a human ancestor. I was really not expecting to find these sorts of cut marks." Almost all of the bone's marks could be classified as cut marks with a high degree of confidence, Pobiner said. Not all cut marks mean cannibalismTwo marks (5 and 6) were identified as tooth marks, and the rest were identified as cut marks. Pobiner hopes the findings will inspire other researchers to return to existing collections to look for more cut marks.

CNN —Nine cut marks on a fossilized shin bone suggest that ancient human relatives butchered and possibly ate one another 1.45 million years ago, according to a new study. “These cut marks look very similar to what I’ve seen on animal fossils that were being processed for consumption,” Pobiner said in a news release. Jennifer ClarkWhat the cut marks revealStudy coauthor Michael Pante, a paleoanthropologist at Colorado State University, created 3D models based on molds of marks on the bone. He said cut marks were reported on the cheek bone of a hominin fossil found in Sterkfontein, South Africa, in 2000 that could be about 2 million years old. Pobiner, however, said the source of the cut marks in that case was disputed.

CNN —Rocket launches are like opening a box of chocolates, only riskier — you never know what you’re going to get. When a rocket is set to leap off the launchpad, there’s a good chance of seeing a stunning liftoff or a spectacular failure. The lead-up to this week’s launch of SpaceX’s Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, was a dramatic roller coaster. The rocket blasted off from the launchpad in South Texas and roared 24.2 miles (39 kilometers) over the Gulf of Mexico. Now, researchers have a new theory about why the Vikings abruptly departed in the mid-15th century: rising sea levels.
